Cover Art: Burned by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast

P.C.  just posted the cover Burned due out April 27th:

When friends stop trusting each other, Darkness is there to fan the flames....

Things have turned black at the House of Night. Zoey Redbird's soul has shattered. With everything she's ever stood for falling apart, and a broken heart making her want to stay in the Otherworld forever, Zoey's fading fast. It's seeming more and more doubtful that she will be able pull herself back together in time to rejoin her friends and set the world to rights. As the only living person who can reach her, Stark must find a way to get to her. But how? He will have to die to do so, the Vampire High Council stipulates. And then Zoey will give up for sure. There are only 7 days left...

Enter BFF Stevie Rae. She wants to help Z but she has massive problems of her own. The rogue Red Fledglings are acting up, and this time not even Stevie Rae can protect them from the consequences. Her kinda boyfriend, Dallas, is sweet but too nosy for his own good. The truth is, Stevie Rae's hiding a secret that might be the key to getting Zoey home but also threatens to explode her whole world.

In the middle of the whole mess is Aphrodite: ex-Fledgling, trust-fund baby, total hag from Hell (and proud of it). She's always been blessed (if you could call it that) with visions that can reveal the future, but now it seems Nyx has decided to speak through her with the goddess's own voice, whether she wants it or not. Aphrodite's loyalty can swing a lot of different ways, but right now Zoey's fate hangs in the balance.

Three girls... playing with fire... if they don't watch out, everyone will get Burned.

Thanks to Mundie Moms for sharing Raised by Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes due out June 10, 2010

PACK LIFE IS ABOUT ORDER, BUT BRYN IS ABOUT TO PUSH ALL THE LIMITS, WITH HAIR-RAISING RESULTS.
At the age of four, Bryn watched a rabid werewolf brutally murder her parents. Alone in the world, she was rescued and taken in by Callum, the alpha of his pack. Now fifteen, Bryn's been raised as a human among werewolves, adhering to pack rule (mostly). Little fazes her.
But the pack's been keeping a secret, and when Bryn goes exploring against Callum's orders, she finds Chase, a newly turned teen Were locked in a cage. Terrifying memories of the attack on her mom and dad come flooding back. Bryn needs answers, and she needs Chase to get them. Suddenly, all allegiances to the pack no longer matter. It's Bryn and Chase against the werewolf world, whatever the consequences.
An exciting new paranormal adventure, with a heroine who rivals Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Raised By Wolves will leave you howling for more.

Thanks to SciFi Guy for spotting Shadow Chase by Seressia Glass due out August 2010

In a job like this, one mistake can cost you everything.
As a Shadowchaser, Kira Solomon has been trained to serve the Light, dispatch the Fallen, and prevent the spread of chaos. It’s a deadly job, and Kira knows the horror of spilling innocent blood. But now she has a new role, as the Hand of Ma’at, the Egyptian Goddess of Truth and Order, and an assignment that might just redeem her.
A fellow Shadowchaser has gone missing, and so has a unique artifact imbued with astonishing magic. Unless the Vessel of Nun is returned, it will cause destruction beyond anything the modern world has seen. Kira’s got a team at her back, including Khefar, a near-immortal Nubian warrior who’s already died for her once. But as complicated as her feelings for him are, they’re nothing compared to the difficulties of the task she faces. And the only way to defeat the enemy at hand is to trust in a power she can barely control, and put her life—and her soul—on the line.

Thanks to Dark Faerie Tales for spotting (the final?) cover art for Black Blade Blues by J. A. Pitts due out April 27, 2010

Sarah Beauhall has more on her plate than most twenty-somethings: day job as a blacksmith, night job as a props manager for a low-budget movie, and her free time is spent fighting in a medieval re-enactment group.

When the lead actor breaks Sarah’s favorite one-of-a-kind sword, it sends the director into fits. Sarah agrees to repair the blade to avoid reshooting scenes.

One of the extras claims to be a dwarf and offers to help her at the forge. That’s when things start to get weird. Could the sword really be magic, as he claims? Why does he want her to kill a Portland investment banker? And what is it about that homeless guy that has her on edge?

As if things weren’t surreal enough at that point, Sarah’s girlfriend Katie breaks out the dreaded phrase… “I love you.”

Black Blade Blues is about forging an existence in a world that is much different than one expects.

Oh, and dragons.

And last but not least, in her newsletter Rachel Caine unveiled the last of her Weather Warden covers, Total Eclipse due out August 2010.  Can I say how much I love the evolution of these covers?

Please join me in welcoming debut author Julie Kagawa to All Things Urban Fantasy. Julie is here to answer a few questions about the first book in her new Iron Fey series, The Iron King (available now).

image Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job. She worked as a professional dog trainer until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time. Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyper-active Papillion puppy.

THE IRON KING by Julie Kagawa

MEGHAN CHASE HAS A SECRET DESTINY— ONE SHE COULD NEVER HAVE IMAGINED…

Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school…or at home.

When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.

But she could never have guessed the truth—that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face…and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

Interview

ATUF: What are we going to love about The Iron King?

JK: Everything I hope, lol!  Seriously though, it's not up to me to decide, but I do hope readers will fall in love with the characters and the setting, and maybe enjoy a new twist on old mythology.  And Grimalkin, of course.  Everyone loves Grimalkin. ;-)

ATUF: What can you tell us about the famous Grimalkin?

image JK: Ha! He's still the same sarcastic, infuriating feline that he was before his sudden rise to fame.  When I first started writing him, I just wanted a character who knew the ins and outs of Faery and could guide Meghan to where she needed to go.  Grim kind of took a life of his own, though, and became this amoral, sarcastic, favor-collecting Cheshire Cat, who you were never quite sure if he was really on your side or not.

ATUF: The cover art for The Iron King is lovely.  Can you tell us about any input you had in the design and who the artist is?

JK: Thank you!  And I wish I could say I had anything to do with the design and art and such, but I did not.  Credit goes to the marvelous people at Harlequin Teen for making such a gorgeous cover.

ATUF: How did you get the idea for The Iron Fey series and how many books do you have planned?

JK: The Iron Fey emerged from the thought: “What are faeries afraid of?”  In myth the answer is iron, so what if there were a type of faery that was immune to iron, that had evolved with progress and technology, and how would they affect the more traditional fey?

There are three books planned in the Iron Fey series.  The Iron King in February, The Iron Daughter in August, and The Iron Queen February of 2011.

ATUF: What do you make of the inevitable Wicked Lovely comparisons?

image JK: I adore Melissa Marr's books, and both novels deal with the fey and faery courts, but the story is not quite the same.  Rachel Mead and Stephanie Meyer write two very different vampire stories, and Hush, Hush is not the same as Fallen, though both deal with the same subject matter. Comparisons are inevitable, but every writer is different, and every story will have its own unique twist on an otherwise familiar or popular subject.

ATUF: What are the faeries in your story like?  Do they differ from traditional faery mythology, and if so, how?

JK: I have both the more traditional fey in The Iron King (goblins, sidhe, phouka, etc.) and also the Iron Fey, which have evolved from progress, are immune to iron, and completely at home in big cities and around technology.  Some of the Iron Fey include gremlins, bugs, iron dragons, and packrats.

imageATUF: Faery is a broad term, and you have a great breakdown of the different kinds of Fey on your website.  Do you have a favorite?

JK: I like them all, but I think the phouka are a lot of fun: playful, mischievous, sometimes dangerous.  I also love redcaps, just for their sheer violence and savage natures.  Hard to find a better petty bad guy then a gang of hungry redcaps.

ATUF: On your blog header it says Julie Kagawa: Author, Gamer, Reader.  What are you currently writing, playing (I recommend Uncharted 2), and reading right now?

JK: Writing-wise, I'm working on edits for the last book in the Iron Fey series, The Iron Queen.  I'm completely obsessed with Dragon Age Origins (though I will be getting Uncharted 2 soon) and reading a manga called Shinobi Life.  I love ninjas.

ATUF: Can you share some of your favorite authors/books within this genre?

JK: Certainly!  Favorite YA books include Tithe, Wicked Lovely, Lament, Perfect Chemistry, The Secret Year, Rampant, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Wildwood Dancing, The Lightning Thief, My Soul to Save, Shiver, Poison Study.  (The list goes on, but I'll stop for now.)

ATUF: If The Iron King got the movie treatment, do you have a dream cast in mind?

image JK: I'm sooooooo bad at this. I have no idea for Meghan.  Puck … maybe a younger Seth Green?  I do have the perfect candidate for Ash, though, and that is Ben Barnes.  Seriously, if Prince Caspian had pointed ears and glared more, he would be a perfect Ash. J

Thanks for the interview!

Thank you so much, Julie!  Come back anytime.

Review: Inked by Marjorie M. Liu

image

Book Description:

Four tales of urban fantasy and paranormal romance explore body art that is more than it seems—in a world of magic and mayhem that always leaves it mark . . .

New York Times bestselling author Karen Chance's "Skin Deep" tells the tale of a war mage in Las Vegas who stumbles across an ominous magical ward that appears as a dragon on her skin--and has a mind of its own…

When New York Times bestselling author Marjorie M. Liu's demon slayer Maxine Kiss investigates a grisly murder at a high-class soirée, she finds herself involved in a conspiracy dating back to World War II--and a secret mission that her grandmother may have carried out for the US Government, one that involves the mysterious "Armor of Roses."

In USA Today bestselling author Yasmine Galenorn's "Etched in Silver," a supernatural agent is on the trail of a sadistic serial killer, when an unexpected ally comes to her aid, setting in motion a magical ritual that may end up binding them together, body and soul.

When the heavily tattooed body of a man is found in a Northern California town, FBI Agent Lily Yu is drawn into the case. Trouble is, the victim wasn't human--and the killer isn't finished in USA Today bestselling author Eileen Wilks's "Human Nature."

*Note* I will be reviewing each story in this anthology in separate posts.

Review:
“Armor of Roses” by Marjorie M. Liu continues her Hunter’s Kiss series.  If you’re interested reading this series chronologically, the order would be:

  1. Hunter Kiss (prequel included in the anthology Wild Hunt, and as an eBook novella)
  2. The Iron Hunt (Hunter Kiss, Book 1)
  3. Darkness Calls (Hunter Kiss, Book 2)
  4. Armor of Roses (included in the anthology Inked)

Maxine Kiss is a demon hunter.

a woman whose body is covered in living tattoos—her own personal demons to call upon when the sun goes down, who both protect her life, and are destined to end it. -Marjorie M. Liu

I don’t know what it is about this series, but I’m always underwhelmed. The world building is interesting enough.  This is a world populated by zombies, but not the undead kind. Liu’s zombies are humans possessed by parasitic demons. I think it might be the character of Maxine.  Despite have a unique and intriguing back story (all the women in her family host the tattoos/demons until her daughter comes of age at which point the tattoos/demons move on to the next generation and the woman dies) I find her rather dull. To be fair her mission and unavoidable fate are grim, but she is so completely morose and joyless that it’s hard to develop any empathy for her. And in Armor of Darkness she was bland again.

Finding a message that her grandmother left for her, Maxine uses her magical ability to travel back to the time of WWII and help her future grandmother hunt down the nefarious Black Cat who is amassing an armor of rose tattoos that bind the lives of children.  If you’re a fan of this series, this story doesn’t really add anything to the meta-narrative of the series or even any real character development.

Without spoiling anything, towards the end of this story there is a scene involving children forced onto the set of a porn film being made. The sex itself is not overly graphic, but the presence of little children there was very disturbing.

Sexual Content: A group of people are filming a pornographic film where children are present.
